Off the Grid
by Karyn Good

BLURB

A committed doctor to Vancouver's inner city, nothing fazes Sophie Monroe—until a pregnant teenager shows up at her clinic on Christmas Eve requesting sanctuary and claiming the baby's father is one of the city's most influential businessmen. Sophie is in over her head and thankful when aid shows up in the form of an attorney who's a little too confident and a lot too sexy. Family Law expert Caleb Quinn just wants a date, a chance to prove he isn't the elitist jerk Sophie assumes. Helping deliver a baby is not what he has in mind. But before long protecting a traumatized teenager and her son become his first priority. Even if saving them pits him against the baby's father, a childhood friend. A man who will do anything to keep his dark side private. But justice never comes cheap. Will doing the right thing cost Sophie and Caleb their reputations? Or their lives?

Off The Grid
By Karyn Good
Review by Heidi Lynn

First, I would like to thank Goddess Fish Productions and Karyn Good for providing me with this book so that I may bring you this review.

Huge secrets, drama, mystery, betrayal, cover ups, murder, romance, twists and turns on every corner kept me on the edge of my seat. Off the Grid sure satisfied my craving for that mystery I have been craving.

Sophie had to be my favorite characters in the book. She has a huge heart of gold wanting to help every patient in need. However, Sophie puts her own life on the line to help out a very pregnant Kellie. I loved the fact that they had scenes at a medical clinic in Vancouver.

Off the Grid's book cover does not do the book justice.
  4 out of 5 kisses.

Exert
“I’m here,” he said.

Sophie let out a laugh. She pushed back what she resolved were the last tears of the day. Rolled her eyes, looked up into his. “Lucky you.”

His lips stopped a hair’s breath away from hers. His hands slipped through the strands of her hair. “Exactly.”

Caleb’s lips were so warm against hers. In the dark, behind closed eyelids, she felt the swipe of his tongue. More warmth. No. Heat. And she wanted to absorb it all.

Her mouth opened and she let him in, free to do what he wanted as long as he didn’t stop. It calmed the crazy in her head, leaving her feeling less lost and helpless. Less hopeless. He pulled her in closer, his hand on her waist, one on her cheek. Not pressing. Not leading.

Her hands fumbled over the wrinkled linen of his 164

dress shirt, over the unbuttoned section at his neck. Down sleeves rolled up to his elbows, across his broad back. The scrape of stubble on his neck and along his jawline was rough under her mouth. The stiff strands of hair at the base of his skull tickled her fingertips. It turned soft and tempting as she moved upwards and grabbed hold and captured his mouth.

He had big hands. Better to hold the world up with. They cradled her head and she sighed. He was preparing to stop the kiss. It was in the little nips, his own sigh. When he lifted his head her eyelids were slow to drift open, weighted down by passion and exhaustion. She didn’t want to let the moment go.

One day the inevitable happened and I knew without question the time was right. What to write was never the issue - romance and the gut wrenching journey towards forever.

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter will receive a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

How to Kill Your Boss is only $0.99 during the month of January. Pick up your copy today!

When Tatum’s daydreams of murder become a reality, all fingers point to her.

In Tatum Wood’s opinion, murdering her boss on a daily basis within the safety of her thoughts is better than therapy. Until he takes a swan dive off a building and all evidence points to her. Thank goodness she has Franklin Reed. Her mysterious, overprotective and drop-dead gorgeous coworker is all too eager to play hero. With two attacks in her building and her stalker with a penchant for roses, Franklin’s injection into her life couldn’t have come at a better time.

As Tatum and Franklin scramble to discover who’s behind the murder, secrets are unearthed that question his motives…as well as his identity.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“Who are you?” I swiveled to face him.

His grim expression softened. Barely. “You know who I am.”

“Who are you?” I asked again, more a demand than a question.

“The man who keeps saving your ass.” He looked my way, and I got my first glance at his face. The skin surrounding his eye boasted several shades of purple and blue. His nose definitely didn’t look right, and three large scratches stretched from his left eye to below his cheekbone. Not bad for my first shot at kicking someone’s ass. Instinct urged me to reach over and offer comfort. I tucked my hand under my leg to keep it from such betrayal.

“Why were men shooting at you?” I asked, unable to cloak the seething anger in my tone.

“They weren’t.”

“Now you’re not making sense.”

“You have to trust me.”

“How in the world can you ask me to do that? Why is there a collage of me on your wall?”

Franklin’s lips drew into a tight line. The muscles in his jaw protruded.

“Classified?” I asked, fed up with the way the conversation was going.

“Yes.”

My pressure gage blew. I buried my face in my hands and screamed. “Take me back to the police station. I can’t be near you. I’d rather rot in a cell.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that.” His voice remained calm.

I pulled on the door handle. “I’ll jump out if you don’t start talking. Why were men shooting at you?”

“They weren’t aiming for me, Killer. You were the target.”

Dani's Review:

4 kisses

This book is right up my alley. It kept my attention cover to cover and I mean literally. I could not put it down.

Tatum- One Date Tatum.. This girl, I kind of hated her in the beginning of the book. Her attitude and way of thinking kind of put me off. Smart girl, honest to a fault and still has so many personality flaws.

Franklin- Holy batman. This man had me very intrigued from the word go. I honestly couldn't tell you what my thoughts were in the beginning of the book. As the story progressed, umm where can I sign up for my own Franklin.

This book was a first for me. Reading the blurb had me intrigued, but the action in this book kept me in it until the end. This isn't like other books you read where you can predict what is going to happen. My predictions were wrong at every turn.  While I had never heard of Krissy Daniels I am glad that I have her a chance and read How to Kill your boss. She will definitely be on my one click list from here out. I cannot wait to see if there will be a second book in this series.

About the Author:

Krissy is a full time writer, an avid reader, and lover of all things romance.

Growing up surrounded by the great outdoors, her childhood was full of adventure that fueled an overactive imagination and ignited a passion for storytelling. Whether it be dolls, or running free through the wooded areas surrounding her home, playtime always included a tormented villain, a damsel in distress and a larger than life hero.

After relentless encouragement from friends and family, she finally put the characters in her head to pen and paper. The only thing she loves more than curling up with a steamy romance novel, is cozying up to her desk and writing her own sexy adventures to share with others.

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Intoxicated by Jeana E. Mann

INTOXICATED
by Jeana E. Mann

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Love is intoxicating, but the hangover can be agony...
Conservative, straight-laced Ally Taylor has the perfect life – successful fiancé, beautiful home, great career – until she catches her fiancé and best friend in bed. Desperate to shake off the sting of rejection, Ally heads to Felony, a notorious heavy metal club on the bad side of town. Even more dangerous than the bar is Jack Jameson, the hunky alpha male bartender whose smoldering dark eyes and dimpled smile turns her common sense to mush and her knees to noodles. After eight long years in a failed romance, the last thing Ally wants is to hook up with someone like Jack, but she can’t help wondering if he’s really as good in bed as his reputation suggests.
Jack Jameson has had his eye on Ally for months, drawn to her smart mouth and tightly wound self-control. When Jack finds Ally sitting on a barstool in his club, heartbroken and miserable, he’s more than happy to offer a little heat between the sheets to distract her. Too bad Ally’s not interested in his “hit-it-and-quit-it” philosophy. If only Jack could convince Ally that he’s tired of the endless parade of girls through his bedroom, she might see him in a different light.
When Jack and Ally get together, everything goes wrong and it’s more than either of them bargained for. Ally’s got serious trust issues and a need for control that makes Jack crazy. Jack’s got more baggage than an airline carousel; the constant stream of women from his past stirs up all of Ally’s insecurities. Can Ally overlook Jack’s womanizing past and learn to trust him? Will Jack be able to commit to just one woman or will a secret from his past ruin everything?
Excerpt:
She didn’t want to believe him, but one look into his dark eyes and she had no doubt that he spoke the truth. Eyes like that didn’t lie. The clarity of their brown depths spoke volumes about his sincerity. He stared back at her with one eyebrow cocked as if daring her to challenge his answer. She cleared her throat and tried to look away but couldn’t. No, if there was one thing she knew for certain, Jack didn’t lie. He didn’t need to.
She shook her head to break the spell. A few more minutes of his heated chocolate stare and she’d be flat on her back with her legs in the air. Then the office gossips really would have something to talk about. “Thanks for lunch.”
We aren’t done yet.” He glanced at the brass and mahogany grandfather clock behind her. “I still have another ten minutes of your time.” She stood and he rose with her, a lithe and graceful motion. “You want to know what I think?”
Does it matter? I’m sure you’re going to tell me anyway.” She took a step backward and he moved with her, herding her backwards in a seductive dance until the backs of her thighs came up against the desk, so close that her skin prickled with a sudden rush of heat.
I think that if you were really into Brian, you would’ve made the time for him. I think that you’re secretly relieved to be free of him and feeling guilty about it. I think that deep down inside you’re dying to break out of this cage you’ve built for yourself with someone who knows how to give a girl what she needs.”
Erin's Review
Jack and Ally are total opposites. She's straight laced, he's all over the place. She has everything together, he's trying to keep it together. This seems like a match made in hell, but it could be just what they both wanted.
Ally needs to loosen up, no doubt about it. Fresh from the ultimate betrayal of her longtime boyfriend and her best friend, she was NOT looking for a relationship in the least.
Jack needs someone that won't be the flavor of the night. He plays the field and is a bit rough around the edges. Ally is a challenge that needs to be conquered and she just might be his downfall.
 The sexual tension between these two can be felt throughout the story. Ally's hesitation added to the already tense heat between them. It was understandably hard for her to trust Jack completely, I mean, he did have a reputation that she was well aware of.
Jack was cocky, funny, sweet and just what Ally needs. She needs someone to help coax her out of her comfort zone and live a little. While he isn't the most together guy, his heart is in the right place and he is trying to do right in every aspect of his life. I like that he wasn't a billionaire playboy. He was a real guy with real problems.
Their story is sweet, sexy and full of drama that makes you think it'll never work. Will it? Well, you have to read to find that out. If you like a good story with a bad boy with a heart? Intoxicated is the read for you. A solid 4 tar read for me!
REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Dreams of Perfection by Rebecca Heflin
BLURB:
What if perfection isn’t truly perfect?
Best-selling romance writer, Darcy Butler, is holding out for perfection in the form of her own carefully-crafted heroes. Once blissfully engaged to be married, Darcy’s post-traumatic commitment phobia is depriving her of the very thing she wants most: her very own happily-ever-after. Now, here she is just six months shy of her thirtieth birthday, and not a Prince Charming in sight.
Successful lawyer, Josh Ryan, is the boy-next-door with a soft spot for the less fortunate, and Darcy’s best friend without benefits. Darcy often comes to him lamenting her love-life, or the lack thereof, whereupon Josh patiently doles out his sage advice. Problem is Josh is in love with Darcy.
But when Darcy finds herself looking into the handsome face of the man who graces the cover of her soon-to-be-released novel, she’s convinced her dreams of perfection have come true. Or have they?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

DAWN'S REVIEW:

I would give this wonderful story 4 stars. I love Darcy and Josh. They put that age old theory of 'can a man a woman just be friends' and yes they can. Even though there are some moments when we see both Josh and Darcy are trying to fight the inevitable,  Rebecca writes these characters in such a unique and beautiful way. I would have to say the one thing I love about her is her names of her characters. I would highly recommend this book to others, especially to those that love a good romance.

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Four Leaf Clover by Charmaine Ross

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Charmaine will be awarding a copy of the book to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

A sexy, sugar-laden David vs Goliath story about a local bakery, a national chain, and what really matters.

Clover Loveday has worked hard to get her café Four-Leaf Clover up and running, her ticket out of an increasingly alarming financial situation and her dream come true. When she literally falls off her ladder into the arms of national bakery chain Upper Crust owner, sexy-as-sin Liam Sinclair, who owns the new bakery being built just across the road, she decides that no matter how nauseated she is about the idea, it is best keep your enemy close, rather than leave things to fate.

Liam has never put too much thought into the competition when he opens a new outlet, other than taking their customers and strengthening the Upper Crust brand. But here in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, Clover Loveday’s cafe is a little too close for comfort, and Clover Loveday a little too good-looking. So Liam asks his PA to put together a Fact Sheet about his new competition. He has a business to run, a father to please, and hundreds of people to keep in jobs. Surely information can keep an unwanted strong sexual pull at bay…

A sexy, caffeinated, satisfying story about unexpected temptations, forgiveness, and putting love before money.

Enjoy an excerpt:

‘I thought this might happen.’ The voice was bemused, and also very male. So deep and warm it clung to her bones. Which was absolutely ridiculous. She blinked away the spots and looked into a pair of striking eyes. What she thought was just light brown was now more sienna, with streaks of cinnamon spearing the inky iris. The eyes were keenly intelligent, and she felt as though she were under an intense spotlight. Maybe it was the way they didn’t flicker from her face, or that they held a sprinkling of disapproval, but his gaze also irritated her.

‘What sort of a man frightens a woman who’s up a ladder?’ She couldn’t help the words that tumbled out.

The eyes widened, his brows arching high. ‘Why was this woman up a ladder?’

‘A woman who needs to gets things done!’ She sounded more snappish than she wanted, but the amused way in which he watched her fuelled her aggravation.

His lips turned up slightly at the edges. ‘And how does this woman plan to get things done when she’s sprawled across the floor?’

‘I wasn’t about to sprawl across the floor, as you put it, until you barged through the door and yelled at me.’ She narrowed her eyes, trying to be her most severe, which she probably wasn’t doing a very good job of. Her friend, and now waitress, Holly said she was about as frightening as a wombat, even when she’d fully lost it. Which rarely happened. And it was this infuriating man’s fault she’d now lost her usual good humour.

‘I didn’t barge through the door, and I certainly didn’t yell at you. I was just trying to get you to be careful.’

‘What? By startling me so much I fell off the ladder?’

‘You shouldn’t have been up there, especially in boots like those.’ He indicated her boots with a tip of his head. She noticed how ruffled his hair was. Spiking in all directions, as though he’d just run his hands through it.

‘There’s nothing wrong with my boots.’ She’d got them at the Beggar’s Bazaar at the end of Main Street on a sale. Black leather cowboy boots, floral patterns imprinted into the leather and practical flat heels. She loved these boots the moment she’d seen them and after she’d finally plucked up the courage, and the savings, to buy them, she’d worn them just about every day since.

His eyes flowed from her ankles to her thighs. His gaze was as intimate as a touch and as though hypnotised, she watched his eyes travel to hers.

‘No. There’s not.’

About the Author:
I live in Upwey, a very leafy suburb of outer Melbourne. I can hear most Melbournians say, ‘Where?’ Think Puffing Billy, the hills and inexcusably steep driveways and you're there. We have a house with room for the kids to play in the backyard, the cat to sleep wherever and the husband to lounge on a bean-bag in front of the telly. I love romance because it adds so much to the story. Everyone needs a little love to take them away.

Sarah's Review:
Thank you to Goddess Fish and Charmaine Ross for the opportunity to read and review this sweet romance.  I have been so busy with real life for the last few months but now that things are settling down I am able to start picking more books to review.  Once I read the blurb for this story, I knew I wanted to read it.

I loved that the businesses were competitors but Clover and Liam found a way to make things work between them.  The way that Liam was able to prove to Clover that he wasn't out to hurt her or her business made me fall more in love with his character.  There were times when I wanted to smack clover, but yet at the same time, I understood where she was coming from.

I love that this story was not set in the United States.  It gave me a different perspective since I live in the US.  I enjoy reading romances that are set in other locations because I like seeing how others view things in different countries.

BOOK BLAST: The Rebel Cowboy's Quadruplets by Tina Leonard

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Tina will be awarding a $25 Amazon GC to TWO randomly drawn commenters during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour. Remember, the more stops you visit and comment, the better your chances to win.

REBEL WITH A CAUSE?

Justin Morant can't believe he answered an online dating ad! Turns out, beautiful Mackenzie Hawthorne is looking for a ranch foreman, not a husband. Good thing, because marriage isn't in the injured bull rider's future. Justin is happy to take up the cause of saving the Hanging H ranch—and then there's the bonus of playing stand-in father to the sexy single mom's four angelic newborns.

Mackenzie doesn't know what miracle brought Justin to Bridesmaids Creek, Texas, but she'd be a fool to fall for the hunky cowboy who wears his rebel status like a badge of honor. Justin's a natural with her daughters and a whiz at ranching…yet one day she knows he's going to gallop off into the sunset. Unless, of course, the marriage-minded townspeople get their hands on him!

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“You’ve got the strangest look on your face,” Ty said as Justin returned his gaze to Mackenzie. He just couldn’t seem to get enough of looking at her. “I’d say you have indigestion, except you’re smiling.”

Justin relaxed his mouth so the smile would disappear. He had been smiling, because his muscles ached a bit. Like he’d been smiling a long time—watching Mackenzie walk and chatter with some friends who came over to talk to her.

“I’m not smiling, but I may have indigestion.”

Ty snorted. “I see what’s going on here.”

“Do you.” He made the comment as flat as possible. His buddy’s opinion didn’t really matter. Ty had no idea what was going on, because Justin had no idea.

“You’re tired,” Ty said. “Being around those babies and that falling-down farm has worn you out. You better hit the road with me. You’ll be back to your old self in no time.”

“What was my old self?”

Ty put his hat on, prepared to leave, which was fine with Justin. Then he could go back to surreptitiously staring at Mackenzie. “Grumpy, cranky, annoying.”

Justin grunted. “Thought that was you.”

“Not me.” He peered at Justin. “I really hope this wasn’t too much for you, old buddy. I didn’t mean to bring you down. Figured some time in a small town with a real job would do you good.”

Justin put his hat on, too, because if he didn’t get out of there, people were going to notice that he couldn’t stop staring at his beautiful boss. “That’s what you get for thinking. See you at the house. Don’t get there too soon. I’m taking the boss lady shopping.”

Ty stared at him, stunned. “What’s happened to you?” he whispered. “You’re a shadow of your former self!”

Well, that was a question he didn’t care to ponder too much. Mackenzie came to stand beside him, smiling up into his face, and his poor stupid heart felt like it took the final dive into his stomach.

What had happened to him indeed.

Mackenzie and four babies were happening to him, and they were going to require a great deal of consideration. This was a bad idea, this tiny woman with the big eyes and her sweet family. A very bad idea, because he wasn’t a family man; he wasn’t a staying man.

“You ready?” he asked Mackenzie, and she nodded.

“If you’re not going to chicken out,” she teased.

Oh, he might. He was thinking about it. Thinking about it hard.

But something told him he probably wouldn’t.

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: ALWAYS AND FOREVER LOVE BY LYNN CRANDALL

Always and Forever Love
by Lynn Crandall

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The presence of a ghost in her life doesn't alarm Lacy Aegar, in fact it makes her happy. Two and a half years ago when her dead husband Nicholas reappeared in her life as a full-bodied spirit, she questioned her sanity. But with Nicholas' explanation that there are things about life that are not as she's always believed, she settled into a pleasant routine of working with her sister at their private investigation business and enjoying home life with her now 10-year-old son – with Nicholas never very far away.
Lacey's complacency and sense of stability is sent topsy-turvy when she runs into Jackson Carter, the son of powerful and influential business tycoon, William Carter. Typical of the Carter reputation, Jackson's slick new private investigating business is siphoning off clients from the Aegar sisters' business, creating financial difficulty. It's a recurring nightmare for Lacey, who has already seen damage done by the Carter family, and when she encounters Jackson, she wants nothing to do with him.
But things are not what they seem when it comes to Jackson Carter, either. Unbeknownst to Lacey and her sister, Jackson is fighting a battle to preserve his business, too, and his integrity. For him, it's a fight for his soul, and he enlists Lacey's help because of her unique investigative skills and open heart. When she uncovers a mole in his business, she also discovers that one of his clients' drug trials has been given the green light to go to the next phase based on falsified data. As they work together to save both their businesses, Jackson and Lacey not only face death, they must come to grips with their feelings about love and life.
Walking into the master bath, Lacey stopped short. “Geez! Now, that’s a bathtub,” she exclaimed. Her voice echoed slightly against the marble tile walls and gray slate floor. Jason waited patiently at the doorway while her gaze moved from one opulent element to another. A large white and gold marble whirlpool tub, deep enough to disappear in, was framed on three sides by frosted glass windows and a small garden of palms and feathery ferns. On another wall stood a shower stall sporting a gold rain-head showerhead and etched glass doors.
Hi, Uncle Jake.”
Jason’s greeting jolted Lacey out of her skin. Retreat was impossible. She turned to face the square shoulders, tall frame, and solid jaw of a dark-haired man. “Uncle Jake, I presume?” She wasn’t doing anything wrong, so why did she feel her as though Brad Pitt had just caught her picking her nose?
I know who I am. Who are you and what are you doing in my bathroom?” The man’s voice was clipped velvet. His arm circled Jason protectively.
She stuck out her hand. “I’m Lacey Aegar. And as for what I’m doing here…”
I hired her, Uncle Jake. She’s going to find Snickers.”
She looked from Jason’s cherubic face and up into the glistening brown eyes of his uncle and felt her composure melt into the cold slate beneath her feet. “Umm…I’m a private investigator. And your nephew has asked me to…”
I think you’ve seen enough, Ms. Private Investigator or gossip columnist or whoever you are.” The man grabbed Lacey’s elbow and began to usher her briskly out of the room.
But Uncle Jake—”
If you’ll just hold on a minute I can explain.” Lacey’s face burned at the man’s insinuation. With Jason at his heels, the man swept Lacey down the stairs and was heading toward the front door, where she spread out her hands and planted them against the hard wood. "Stop,” she demanded, whirling around to face him head-on. “I’m not leaving until I finish what I came here for, and that’s to help Jason find his dog.”
Erin's Review
This story was NOT what I expected at all! When you start reading, you think you're reading another romantic suspense novel, then BAM, here comes a ghost. But it's written in such a beautiful way that you almost forget you aren't reading a story about a typical married couple. Nicolas and Lacy's love transcends death and she is happy with that. Nicolas wants her to move forward, but will she accept that?
 Enter Jackson Carter, the son of Lacy's nemesis. When she helps his nephew find his lost dog, the last thing she wanted to do was make nice with Jackson. Her preconceived notions about him cloud her astute judgement and while she is cool and professional, she is far from being friendly. Especially since his new business is taking clients away from Lacy and her sister.
 When a situation arises that requires Jackson to hire Lacy, she reluctantly agrees. Throughout the course of her work, she finds herself thinking more of Jackson, but what will Nicolas think? Is she ready to let go of her husband and welcome a new love in to her life?
 Nicolas sets things in to perspective for Lacy. He is her voice of reason, her rock. Jackson is new and has a lot to prove, and Lynn still has a job to do. The longer the job plays out, the more dangerous it becomes, and the more Jackson and Lacy fall for each other.
 This is a sweet story of new beginnings. It's a paranormal that isn't a paranormal. Lynn strikes a perfect balance of romance and suspense and throw in a ghost husband and you have yourself a wonderful story. To fully understand Lacy's relationship with her husband you have to read the book. Lynn does a beautiful job giving the reader a glimpse in to their relationship and the love they share. This story makes you happy and opens your eyes to see what could happen when you let someone new in and that it's ok to let go.
Lynn will be awarding a $20.00 Amazon or B&N gift card to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour, so don't forget to enter to win!
BOOK BLITZ & GIVEAWAY: Fiance By Fate by Jennifer Shirk
BLURB:
Their fake relationship is a twist of fate.
Sabrina Cassidy believes in fate. So when her fiancé breaks off their engagement, she’s convinced they’ll get back together eventually. But fate was not on her side when it brought Jack Brenner into her life—and work. Frustrating, gorgeous, and cocky, Jack has an offer that Sabrina can't refuse. Not if it means getting the life she’s always imagined.
Despite being one of the town’s most eligible bachelors, Jack has a reputation that’s working against him. He has to convince his father—and his company’s board—that he’s ready to settle down if he wants a promotion. But convincing Sabrina to be his fake girlfriend turns out to be the easiest part. What he didn’t count on was their intense attraction and how easily their lie would escalate.
Sabrina’s still hung up on her ex, and Jack will never settle down.
EXCERPT:
Jack gazed across the table at her. Sabrina seemed intent on playing with her dessert and hadn’t noticed him watching her. The night was chockfull of surprises. It wasn’t every woman who knew just as much about baseball as he did and even enjoyed discussing it. This was the most mellow he’d seen her. Usually she was all wrapped up in anxiety and spreadsheets, which was why he couldn’t resist egging her on whenever he had the chance. She made it almost too easy. And way too much fun.
    There really was nothing sexier to him than a woman all riled up with anger. It was just another form of passion in his book. And Sabrina seemed to have more than an average share. Especially when she looked like she could melt an iceberg with the heat radiating from those baby-blue eyes of hers. The way her cheeks flamed pink and those soft, generous lips of hers pouted and got all—
    Uh-oh. Where’d that thinking come from?
    That kiss.
    Mother of mercy, who knew she had such deadly precision with that mouth of hers? Something had ignited between them from the moment their lips had touched. He knew it was wrong, yet here he was wishing those lips were on his again. What an idiot he was. He couldn’t involve himself with her. Hell, she barely liked him. And she was engaged.
    Sort of.
    Jack continued to study her. There was something mesmerizing about the way the candlelight reflected in her dark hair—how it flowed just slightly past her shoulders and looked smooth and glossy, like rich, melted chocolate. He was struck with an irresistible urge to reach out and feel it.
    And that’s when he decided to call it a night.
    “All right, let’s get you home,” he announced.
    Sabrina didn’t lift her eyes from her dessert she was making fork tracks through. “What about the check?” she murmured.
    “It’s already paid.”
    She frowned. “But I told you I wanted to go Dutch.”
    Jack sighed. Doesn’t this woman ever turn it off? Four sheets to the wind and she was worried about paying her share. “No, friends go Dutch. Fake girlfriends get their meals paid for by their fake boyfriends. Now let’s get out of here.”
    Sabrina finally looked up with huge innocent eyes, the corners of her mouth sagging south. “Didn’t you like your dinner?”
    “Of course I liked my dinner.”
    “Then why are you so crabby?”
    Because I can’t stop thinking about those mouthwatering lips of yours and the way they moved against mine. Happy? Although, if he confessed that little nugget of truth, he doubted she’d be happy at all. “Um, you didn’t offer me any of your cheesecake.”
    She let out a beautiful laugh. “You had your own cheesecake.”
    The way her smile burst through like sunshine had the direct opposite effect on his mood. “What can I say? I like to eat,” he said tightly. “Come on.”
    “Is David still here?” she whispered.
    “No, he left about twenty minutes ago.”
    Her fork dropped with a clank. “What? Did he look forlornly over here before he left?”
    “I don’t know,” he mumbled. But the truth was David had stared at them all evening. Jack didn’t know why he didn’t feel like sharing that information with her. Maybe because he found David’s actions rude. If Jack were dating Sabrina for real, he would have gone over there and made it known to him.
    “How could you not know?” she asked. “You’re supposed to be my eyes and hears.”
    He rolled his eyes. “You mean eyes and ears.”
    “Oh.” She thought about it and nodded. “Yes, that’s better.”
    He had to smile. “I thought so.”
    She glanced at her watch, and her eyes widened. “I should have called my landlord. I didn’t think I’d be out this late.”
    “Your landlord has you on a curfew?”
    She shook her head, and it flopped back and forth like a rag doll. “She’s having her apartment painted, and I told her she could stay with me. She’s probably asleep by now anyway.”
    “Well, aren’t you Miss Congenial?”
    She stared at him with a confused look. “No, it’s Miss Cassidy,” she slurred.
    He couldn’t help but chuckle. The woman was adorable—too adorable. “I need a cigarette,” he murmured.
    Her little nose wrinkled. “Ugh. You smoke?”
    “I used to. Gave it up a few years ago, but still get the urge when I’m stressed. Started smoking in college. Probably the least of my bad habits back then.”
    “Why did you start?” Sabrina rested her chin in her hand and gazed at him, all dreamy and sincere—and intoxicated. His eyes drifted to her mouth for the second time. She was doing that sexy-pout thing again.
    Jack had to clear his throat. “I don’t know. Probably because it got me through my mom’s death a little.”
    She gasped. “You were so young. How did she die?”
    Jack frowned. Sabrina obviously didn’t realize he never talked about his mom with anyone. There were certain lines you did not cross with people unless invited. Ever. And she most certainly had not been issued an invitation. But as Jack continued to stare into her soft blue eyes, a small chip of his resolve was taken out.
    “She committed suicide,” he finally answered.
    “Oh, no,” she whispered in horror. “I’m sorry.”
    “Thanks, but you don’t have to tell me that. It was a long time ago. At least it wasn’t messy. She took some pills and never woke up.”
    “It was a long time ago, but you still must carry a part of that with you. Something like that you can’t simply turn off.”
    Her conviction made him think she spoke from experience. But he didn’t want to share any more of himself with her tonight. He preferred fun and detached—unemotional. He feverishly tried to brush off the way the warmth in her eyes was making him feel. “No, you can’t turn it off, but you can break the nozzle.”
    The look on her face told him that line was an instant party killer. But he didn’t want to spend time pouring his heart and soul out to her. It left him too vulnerable. Something he hadn’t been since his mother died.
    “Let’s go,” he said shortly and stood up.
