SYNOPSIS
One blink,
One breath of air,
One moment in time …
Could change your life forever.

Growing up, Peyton Spencer fell in love with the boy across the road, Callum Reid. As the years went by, it only made sense that they would wind up being completely and utterly infatuated with each other. That was, until the morning Peyton wakes up to find Callum packing up and leaving the small town they lived in. Left heartbroken and with no explanation, Peyton spends the next four years of her life without him, ensuring they never cross paths again.

At seventeen and months after Callum leaves her, Peyton buries her parents—feeling more alone than ever before. Now at twenty-one, she’s inherited the family hotel, The Spencer-Dayle. Just when she thinks life couldn’t get more complicated, the one person that shattered her heart, soul and belief returns. For Peyton, his return opens up all her old wounds and resurfaces the memories she’s tried to forget.

He’s not the same boy she once fell in love with. He’s guarded and keeps secrets close to him. Peyton knows her life will begin to unravel.

Untold truths will finally come to light. Whether or not Peyton wants to hear it, the truth will undoubtedly break her heart all over again.

GOODREADS:

EXCERPT/TEASER:
“I’m hoping you still like Vegemite and cheese sandwiches. You had it all there so I assumed,” Callum said as he sat in the chair in front of Peyton.
He gave her a faint smile before he stared at the candle; the flame reflected in his eyes. Not liking the circumstances she was in and the pressure in her chest, Peyton leant forward and blew out the flame he intently looked at.
“What was that for?” he asked. The light from the other candle on the table made his cheek visible.
Peyton sat back and gave him a shrug. “I’m not one for romance and these candles are a red alert for me. I’d rather we eat in the dark since my first want of you leaving my house isn’t happening.”
“Fine,” Callum said before he leant forward and blew out the last candle on the table. Only the light from the candles behind him made some things visible. “I’m not trying to romance you, Peyton. I don’t want that.”
She rolled her eyes, not caring if he could see or not. “Me either.”
“You don’t?”
She smirked at the curiosity in his voice. She didn’t want him to; purely because she knew her heart couldn’t withstand him for much longer.
“No, Callum Reid. You are the last man I want romancing me.”
She was just able to see a smile on his face. And that didn’t make her feel satisfied with her response at all. She couldn’t figure him out. She gave him what he wanted and yet he wouldn’t take it. He was far too much of a mystery. A challenge her heart wanted to conquer and claim.
A tremble coursed through her. She blamed it on those feelings the seventeen-year-old she had been had harboured for him. Not the twenty-one-year-old. No. That Peyton hated the man that sat in front of her.
“Glad we can agree on something. You know you can be pretty stubborn, Peyton. Always have been. Guess with time it’s gone from pretty stubborn to definitely and proudly stubborn,” Callum pointed out.
Crossing her arms over her chest, she glared at him. “I’m not stubborn. You’re a challenge not worth my time. Been there done that. I’m over you.”
There was no quick reply like she expected. Instead she heard the sound of a matchstick and then the candle to her right was lit and then the one to her left. Callum blew the matchstick out and placed it on the table.
She missed the darkness that consumed him. The light provided a detailed look of anguish on his face. Peyton’s breathing became shallow, hardly reaching her lungs.
“How’d you get over me, Peyton?”
She heard the break in his voice. He didn’t seem to notice it but she had. That vulnerability made her heart leap, filling it with useless hope.
“It was easy.”
“How easy?” he asked.
Peyton sensed the hurt in his question.
“It was a simple task,” she stated as she sat up and uncrossed her arms. She picked up the sandwich and took a large bite. She internally cursed him for remembering one of her favourite foods.
“Do tell,” he said with a raised brow.
“What’s to tell, Callum? It’s simple. You ripped out my heart, crushed it in your hands and forced it back in my chest. You left me with a gripping ache for four years. That’s how I got over you… because I had to. Because life made me.”
Her throat tightened and she found it difficult to hold back a sob, but she’d be damned if he saw her like he did in the forest. Never again.
“How did life make you get over me?”
Peyton put the sandwich back on the plate and stood up, looking down at him. He had grown since her. He’d experienced more and saw things she hadn’t. She closed her eyes for a moment before she stared at him. The regret on his face was one she winced at.
“Because life… God… the universe… any higher power out there killed my parents and broke me more than you could have. Grieving their deaths made it easier to forget you. I didn’t just get over you. I forgot you. I had to.”
Lie. Death made me remember you more.

EXCERPT:
“Chelsea…”
She turned her head and caught the concerned look on his face lit by moonlight. She worried that he misunderstood and that she sounded desperate for the love of a man.
“I didn’t mean to imply that—” She tried to correct what her heart had forced her to say when Max shifted her to his lap and kissed her. The unexpected move took her by surprise but then she let herself go. His lips melted into hers in a kiss she felt to her very soul.
“God, I’ve wanted to do that for weeks,” he said as breathless as she was when they broke apart.
“You did?” She smiled when he placed a softer kiss on her cheek and then her neck. “Why did you wait so long?”
“If I knew you tasted so sweet, I wouldn’t have.” This time she made him smile when she pulled him down and kissed him back. “That night at your house I had all I could do to keep myself on your couch.”
“Really? I’d had two glasses of wine and I’m afraid they made me bolder than I ever would have been.”
“I like you bold. You were a total turn on,” he said between kisses.
“I like this,” she said and traced her fingers along his jaw. “I’ve never met a man like you, Max Hamilton. You’re so edgy, yet there’s this soft, gentle side.”
“Don’t let that get around.”
“No, I’m serious. I’ve seen you with Bella. She adores you and you definitely have a way with her. I think you’d be a wonderful father.”
“You think so, huh?” Chelsea felt the chuckle vibrate through his chest. “Being a parent isn’t as easy as I thought, that’s for sure.”
“I agree. I couldn’t do this alone.”
“I’m sure you could.” His voice took on a serious tone that she chose to ignore.
“Maybe, but it’s much easier with you. I’m thankful that you’re here.” He closed his eyes and stiffened, making Chelsea regret the words. The kisses they’d shared were wonderful and if he’d been thinking anything close to what she had, then she needed him to know they could have a chance.
“You know I can’t stay, right? I still have a job to do and soon I’ll be leaving to do it.” He opened his eyes and forced her to look at him. “I can’t be your white-picket-fence, Chelsea.”
“I know.” She wanted to scream and ask why not, but she swallowed the question as his arms tightened around her, pulling her close until their lips were almost touching.
“No, you don’t know. I can’t promise you a future but I can damn well be your here and now if you want me.”
“Yes, Max. Yes I want you.” More than he would ever know.

Sarah's Review:
Thank you to Wanderlust Book Tours for reaching out for a promo for this story and then reaching out to the author when I wanted to review it.  I was instantly drawn in by the title then after reading the blurb, I knew I wanted to read this book.  Boy, am I glad I did!  I love the military romances almost as much as I love romance in general.  I don't get to read as many military romances as I would like, but when they come in, I pounce. Since this is a short romance, it will be difficult not to give anything away, but I will try.

When Max and Chelsea experience the death of their siblings, little do either know that sweet baby Bella that lost both of her parents will be something that neither one of them saw coming.

Max is furious when he finds out about having a niece that he knew nothing about and thinks that Chelsea is only after the family farm.  What Max doesn't realize is that Chelsea is following her deceased sister's wishes.   Talk about fireworks and jumping to conclusions, boy, Max was a pro at that.  When he realizes just how wrong he was, he doesn't know what hit him.

Chelsea knew that she would be raising her niece after her sister's death and much to her parents arguments against it, she and Bella relocate to be near Bella's other side of the family.  Chelsea get the surprise of her life when she meets Max and he ends up being hateful towards her and Bella.  That is until the meeting with the lawyer to discuss Nathan and Val's final wishes for their daughter.

What happens after that meeting changes everyone involved but the path isn't easy for them.

Excerpt:
“Oh God. Tell me you didn’t feed her some line so you could sleep with her.”

His brother’s reaction stunned him into silence. That’s exactly what he’d done, even if he hadn’t been conscious of it at the time. When he rediscovered his voice, he asked, “Why would that be so terrible?”
“That girl needs a man with staying power you have yet to demonstrate.”
Stan’s accusation hit him with the power of a 105 mph fastball, and Matt sank to the floor again. His butt hit the carpet with a soft “thunk.” His brother was right. These days, his relationships lasted no longer than Greg’s.
“Please tell me you’re still in the same room with her. Meg’ll feel abandoned all over again if you’re not there when she wakes up.”
Odd that Stan was more concerned about Meg than his own flesh and blood. “Are you forgetting who you’re related to? I’m your brother.”

Stan’s silence spoke volumes. Wondering how he managed to convey such strong disapproval without saying a word, Matt sighed. “I’m in the hallway outside the room. Does that count?”
“Barely.” Stan sniffed. “I suggest you get back in there, pronto.”
He started to do as his brother suggested, scrambling to his feet again. Before he took a single step toward the door, panic swelled in his throat. “I’m not ready to be a father!”
“Did she ask you to be?”
He had to admit that she didn’t. She’d merely said her future would include a baby. He, fool that he was, had assured her he was okay with that. In the cold light of day, however, he was anything but okay with the thought of being responsible for a small human. With all the time he spent on the road, he wasn’t home regularly enough to keep a houseplant alive, let alone a child.
“I’m only twenty-eight, Stan! That’s too young to be a father.”

His brother snorted. “Some men become fathers at eighteen.”

    “Not good ones.”

This time, Stan chuckled. “Touché. But to hear you tell it, the team’s owners are ready to put you out to pasture at twenty-eight. You can’t have it both ways, bro.”

He ran his free hand through his hair. “Do you blame me for being confused?”

“Not at all. But you need to sort out your feelings. Fast. It’s not fair to Meg to lead her on.”
Again with Meg’s feelings? He scowled at the phone. “Your concern for Meg overwhelms me.”

“She’s already been through enough, Matty. She deserves a guy who treats her like a princess.”

Guilt stabbed at him as he remembered how vulnerable Meg had looked when she mentioned her ex being “out of the picture.” He shuddered. No way did he want to be responsible for putting that look on her face. “I can’t argue with that.”
    “Then go back to bed.”
“That’s the best idea you’ve had all morning.” With that, Matt disconnected the call and re- entered his hotel room. His brother’s advice was dead-on, as usual—even if he’d never admit that to Stan. He’d be there for Meg now, when she needed him. With any luck, they’d get tired of each other before he had to commit to fatherhood.
