Excerpt Love and Lust in the Tropics by Derrick West

She knew their time was very short, and she knew this was the end. She had to have him close to her just one more time. To feel the fire of his passion envelop them, wrap itself around her, become one with her. To feel the heat of him inside her, the warm explosion of his desire filling her.
He felt it too. Pressing her back, he lifted her up on the edge of the table in the cabin, lifting her skirts as she parted her legs for him. Their ship rocked with the explosion of their cannons firing on their pursuers as he pressed himself into her. Their eyes locked together, drawing their souls into each other as she drew his hard desire into her. The fire of passion burst within her, their eyes blazing into each other as they were rocked by a climax they knew would be their last in this lifetime.
Their eyes remain locked as their lips were drawn together.
“My God, you know how to love me, Leif! Never again in this lifetime will we get to feel our love so closely and so wonderfully.”
“Not in this lifetime, dear woman; this is the end of this chapter, isn’t it?”
“But just this chapter, darling man. In our next lifetime, let’s not be pirates. Let’s be respectable people. Let’s settle down and raise a proper family. Maybe a house and a garden.”
He looked deeply into her soul, his eyes soft now with tempered passion. His lips lingered close to hers as he spoke softly. “And could you live a domesticated life, dear woman? Your heart and soul are wild and free, and you know as much as I do how much you adore running full sail before the wind, fighting the damnable overlords who oppress anyone they can, just to feed their greedy need for bloody profits. It’s what you live for.”
“I don’t know, Leif. All I know is that this love we have is something bigger than we understand, and we need to be sure and find each other again next time, and try and get this right. I want more than a few years with you next time. I want a lifetime with you.”

~Excerpt~

“What are you afraid of, Jack?” She stiffened her

spine and stood straighter. “That you might actually

feel something?”

As quickly as he’d shut her out, he pivoted and

stalked across the deck toward her. She took a step

back, but in a few long strides, he reached her,

seized her waist, and dragged her against him. As

her body hit his, a gasp escaped, but she could only

stare at him, stunned. A war raged in the depths of

his eyes. More emotion than she remembered seeing

there in a long time. Desire, anger, pain, frustration,

all fighting for supremacy.

She braced her hands on his chest, to push him

away, but his head dipped down, his lips brushing

over hers, the barest of kisses.

“Or else I may do something I’m pretty sure you’ll

hate me for in the mornin’.” The low huskiness of his

voice washed over her like a heated caress, sending

shivers down her spine, and obliterating whatever

defenses she’d manage to build against him. “The

feel of your hands on me about drove me mad. Do

you have any idea how aroused I am right now? I’m

two seconds from picking you up and carrying you

upstairs.”

 Excerpt

The line at the bar wasn’t long, but she needed a drink--a real drink--and she needed it fast. Jo twirled her empty champagne flute and tapped her toe as the DJ made a cringe-worthy segue between Louis Armstrong and Pink. A pang of regret tweaked her stomach when she spotted her eldest brother, Tony, leading his baby girl from the dance floor, but that was nothing new. She’d suffered so many pangs in her life they’d become a part of her autonomic system. Breathe in, breathe out, pang. Blink, sniffle, sneeze, pang. Go to bed alone--again--pang!
At the tender age of twenty-six, her niece had managed to accomplish everything Jo never had. Kaylin had a career, a home of her own, and a man she loved so much she actually glowed. Literally glowed. Jo hadn’t known such a glow since her mother stopped slathering her sunburns in Noxzema.
Radiant happiness was enough to drive a woman to drink.
Three groomsmen bellied up to the bar and jockeyed for position in front of the pretty blond bartender. Their voices rose as they trumped each other’s orders. Each successive suggestion was an obvious attempt to prove the issuer was more worldly, and therefore manly, than the last. The misguided boys must have believed their ability to chug grain alcohol might make or break their chance at ending the evening in the poor girl’s bed. The bartender eyed them with hardly-contained disdain. The posturing little pricks didn’t notice. Jo couldn’t help but smile when the girl rolled her eyes and went back to stacking glassware.
What little buzz Jo had managed to eke out of two glasses of table wine and a flute of champagne began to wane. She considered goosing one of the guys to shock him into gear, but then another tuxedo-clad man, murmuring quiet excuses, slipped in front of her. The groomsmen jumped when the newcomer gripped their padded shoulders.
Three beers for these guys, please. Give them the imported stuff.” Casually, he stuffed a twenty-dollar bill into the pitcher serving as a tip jar. “Having fun, fellas?”
The groomsmen replied in the affirmative, but their cheeks glowed pink. Bravado squelched, they grabbed their beers and beat a hasty retreat. The hero of the hour turned to face Jo. Recognition kicked in. Saliva pooled in her mouth and a tingle of awareness prickled the fine hairs at her nape. Her savior was none other than the father of the groom. It took a fraction of a second for her brain to source the pertinent facts Kaylin had imparted on Ben’s father. Gregory. Greg. Divorced, devoted dad, and hot as Hades on a summer day. Confronted with him now, Jo was happy to confirm the acute case of the bright shinies hadn’t skewed her niece’s powers of observation. Gregory Stark was all that and more.
He’d sneaked glances at her all through the ceremony. Now, he grinned right at her. “Good to know I’ve still got it.”
His dark eyes glinted with amusement. She wasn’t sure if he was referring to his ability to circumvent a bar line, or the fact that she’d been unable to resist returning every one of the furtive glances he’d tossed her way. Jo decided to play it neutral.
Rolling her parched tongue up off the carpet, she nodded the approbation he was obviously seeking. “Effective.”
No lie. He was the most attractive man she’d laid eyes on in forever. Which made perfect sense in a bizarre Karmic way. Of course she had to meet this man after she’d poked a nail through her last pair of control-top pantyhose.
Still, there was no reason she couldn’t catalog every bit of him for later use. With a practiced eye, she gauged him to be a few years older than her. Her guess put him somewhere in his mid-fifties. Unlike most men, he hadn’t packed on any extra cushioning for the slide into the AARP years. He was tall and lean, his movements as taut and compelling as the lines bracketing his eyes and those sculpted lips. His jaw was smooth and shiny, clean-shaven, but the shadow of a heavy beard loomed below the surface. Jo wanted to know what else he kept hidden under the slick exterior.
He’d been seated in the front pew at the ceremony beside his ex-wife and her husband. Jo wondered what he’d done to earn ex status. For the life of her, she couldn’t imagine any woman willingly giving this man up for the paunchy redhead who’d taken his place.
He nodded toward the array of bottles behind the bar. “Champagne?”
God, no.” The response was automatic. She hated champagne. Pure desperation forced her to resort to the glass poured for the toasts because the dinner wine was long gone. Now he was offering her more. The sparkling wine seemed an apt choice for him. He looked like Cary Grant, what with the wings of silver in his dark hair, the crinkly brown eyes sparkling with mischief, and the tuxedo. Maybe he was offering her champagne because Cary Grant would offer her champagne. Cary would call her “darling.” Would Gregory Stark call her “darling?”
Something tugged at her fingers. She stared in rapt fascination as he removed the forgotten flute from her hand and placed it on the bar. “Oh. No. No more champagne.” She managed a weak twitch of her lips. “Thank you.”
A proprietary hand landed in the small of her back. Jo surrendered to the gentle pressure, closing her eyes and imagining the pads of his fingers to be electrodes. Sparks sizzled along her spine. He spread his fingers wide as he drew alongside her at the bar. Arousal swept through her like a hot flash. Unlike those endless minutes of core meltdown, this heat wasn’t something to be endured. His touch was a treat to be savored. She opened her eyes and found him staring at her, his lips parted and his eyes shining bright.
What’ll it be, then?”
Tequila. Three shots.”
The answer popped out before her brain engaged. It was a ghost from her past. A remnant of the reckless youth she’d left buried under a pile of soul-crushing responsibility.
Whoa. Three?” He craned his neck and scanned the room. “Maybe I should get one of the younger guys back.”
Once upon a time, three was her magic number. The key to managing everything life had thrown at her. Good and bad. The magic of three stopped being effective not long after she’d turned thirty--a bitter disappointment she’d never managed to reconcile with herself. Turns out, fate had her number in another way.
Well, screw fate. She’d played the good girl long enough. Emboldened by the wine and the heat of his hand scorching her back, she looked him square in the eye. “I have no use for boys, thankyouverymuch. Don’t worry. It’s okay if you can’t keep up. I won’t think less of you.”
He laughed. Not a chuckle or a chortle, but a deep, rumbling, full-throated guffaw that wrapped itself around her and drew her closer still. Or maybe he pulled her in with his hand. Either way, she was within sniffing distance, so she took a hit. Pure man. No flowery cologne masked the warm and musky mix of soap, shaving cream, and some kind of whiskey. Thank God.
Set ’em up,” he told the bartender.
The girl lined six tiny glasses along the side rail. Pale amber liquid dribbled onto the bar when she moved from glass to glass. She piled wedges of lime on a napkin and plunked a saltcellar beside it. The furrow of concentration between the bartender’s over-tweezed eyebrows smoothed when Greg shoved another bill into the tip jar.
His hand fell away from Jo’s back as they moved to the side of the bar. She kept her gaze purposefully averted, trying not to pout over the loss. She raised one of the shot glasses in silent salute then downed the tequila without benefit of salt and lime.
The alcohol blazed a trail of fire in her throat. Jo gave her head a toss to soothe the burn. The frank admiration in her companion’s gaze made her pussy tingle with arousal. Her body’s response to this gorgeous stranger startled her. Deep in her heart, she feared she was past all desire.
He leaned in closer. “What’s your name?”
The answer leapt to her tongue, but she bit it back. For one night, this night with this man, she didn’t want to be sad old Aunt Jo. She wanted to be the woman she’d been back in the days before she had to be seated with one of her cousins to round out a table. She wanted to be the girl who thought she had all the time in the world.
Fixing Kaylin’s new father-in-law with a bold stare, she raised a challenging eyebrow. “Jose.”
As in Cuervo?”
Exactly.” When he opened his mouth again, she held up one hand and dredged up the name she used in those wild days of time and tequila. “But you can call me Josie.”
He blinked once then cocked his head, studying her for one long moment. He reached for a glass. The wry twist of his lips told her he was certain she’d given him a fake name, but he didn’t seem to care too terribly much. He eyed her over the rim of the tiny glass. “Nice to meet you, Josie. I’m Greg.”
Silver cufflinks flashed as he tossed the shot back. He chased the booze with a low growl. A golden drop clung to his upper lip. Jo wiped it away with the pad of her thumb but froze as she pulled away. They stared at one another, arrested by her sheer audacity. Mortification set the tips of her ears on fire. She tried to finish her retreat, but he captured her wrist.
Thank you.” He gave her a gentle squeeze. “Tell me, Josie, are you a pussycat?”
Jo laughed. And, damn, it felt good. She was flirting with a handsome man, and he was flirting back with enthusiasm. Quite a rush for a woman long out of practice. She swallowed the lump in her throat and lowered her gaze along with her wayward hand, wondering if her rusty skills were obvious.
Uh-uh. Don’t try to play shy with me now,” he admonished. When she didn’t respond, he leaned close. His breath stirred her hair and tickled her ear. “You’re the most intriguing woman here, and you damn well know it.”
Pleasure ran warm and thick in her veins. Jo closed her eyes, giving herself over to the vague pain of her nipples tightening and the quickening of her pulse. “Do I?”
I noticed you in the church.”
A shiver tripped along her spine. She tipped her head, surrendering to the moist caress of his breath. “You did?”
I couldn’t stop looking at you.”
Though she’d noticed, the bold confession still stunned her. In the way of women too used to being invisible, she’d denied the tingle of knowledge. Hard to believe a man so handsome might find her attractive. For too long she’d played the part of plain old Aunt Jo.
I can’t stop looking at you now.” The husky admission pried her eyes open. “I had to find you.”
The urgency in his tone gave her the boost she needed. Oh, how she wanted to be Josie with the tequila shots once more. With him. For him. Flashing a sly glance, she reached for a second tiny glass. “And now you have.”
He snatched a glass from the bar and touched the rim to hers. His gaze bore into her, unwavering and intense. “And now I have.”

    Erin's Review

Enthrall Him is the conclusion of the Enthrall Series. Over the course of three books we have watched the transformation of Mia Lauren from an unsure, bdsm novice to a perfectly(almost) trained sub, one of whom any Master would be proud to call his own.
Enthrall Him picks up where the last book left off. Mia and Cameron are whisked away after a disastrous night at Chrysalis.  In the time they spend alone together, they both try to fight what has always been simmering just below the surface.  I simply love these two together, even if she isn't technically his. I have always been Team Cameron...sorry Richard!
This is such a well written series. It is so much more than a bdsm romance. It really delves in to the psychology behind the lifestyle and the fact that when a sub submits, she submits wholly. The characters are so well developed you can really get in to their heads and see what they are thinking and most importantly, what they are feeling. These characters are at times, tormented by the decisions that they made and in some cases, have to be made and you feel right along with them.
The triangle that is Mia, Cameron and Richard is full of suspense, twists and turn and passion. A LOT of passion! A beautifully written story that has only gotten better with every book. This is a must read for every fan of erotic romance and a 5 star read from me. I hate to see these characters go!

Prologue

Jaylee

Rikers Island, East Elmhurst, New York

My stomach growls from the shit lunch of bologna and American cheese.  I’ll die before I’m twenty-five in here from all the crap they been feeding me.  I need more calories because of my workout routine, and the commissary just don’t cut it.  Half the time I probably burning muscle, but what the fuck you gonna do about it?  You can’t change this fucked-up machine.  What I wouldn’t give for some Spanish food—just a goddamn plate of my grandma’s rice and beans.
I flip the pen around and around in my hand, trying to think of what to say.  It brings me right back to being eight years old, the school-assigned social worker jabbing at me to “write him whatever you please!”  I pick at a popped blister from going at the weights in the yard.  Soon enough it’ll get hard and callous—just like everybody who been up in here too long.
“He’d love to hear anything about you. Why don’t you tell him about basket-ball?”  As if it was easy, when you hadn’t talked to him in years.  An’ my ma bent over the kitchen table with cried-on love letters to my dad, praying on lighted candles and over special oils to Dios Santísimo, that he don’t get sent to Sing Sing.
We couldn’t afford the trip up there, so we saw him less and less.  The sound of his voice just became a memory to me, and when we did get up there, I pitied the man I saw.  Couldn’t get past the fact that he fucked up. I felt like he let them put him away.  I swore to myself if I ever got there, I’d be smarter than he was.  That I’d get revenge before I’d let ‘em make me live my life behind bars.  Now look at where I am.
At least I got a plan.
Love letters.  Kate wrote me one once.  There’s a trick to them, right?  You gotta try to convince a woman that you’ll love her forever.  It’s not just about the first time she reads it, she’s gotta see it every time she looks.  Try doing it on jail-issued stationery.  I had to earn the privilege to use a pen.  How the fuck you tell someone they everything you got—when all you got is a page?  How do I tell her how much I want her to have my kid?  I love knowing that he’s inside her, that there’s part of me with her.  Thing is, I can’t control the lies she’s being fed; she’ll choose the lawyer over me.

How do you say all that on paper when all you ever got through was public school?   She got everything she needs—or at least that’s how it’d seem to anybody looking in.  But I know—I know—how much Kate needs me.
I crumple up the last sheet of the ones they gave me and toss it onto my bunk.  I don’t know how to put my heart on paper.  I can’t make her understand why I did what I done.

On Friday they call me out for a visit, though I’m not expecting nobody.  Mamá, Janinie, and everybody coming next week—or that’s what we said on the phone.  I’m never expecting Kate again.  I have no idea what she decided to do with the baby.  I don’t know if he still here with us or gone already.  The baby’s the only thing I ever cared about more than her, but I’m not gonna let myself hate her for it.  She shouldn’t a’ had to go through it by herself - either way.  If I’d watched my back, I wouldn’t a’ ended up here.
I stick my hands out the drop door in the cell so they can cuff me.  The corrections officer calls me “Dorado,” ‘cause that’s what they called my pops when he was here.  I try not to get involved, but it ain’t easy when your ties run deep like mine do.  My old man spent a minute in Rikers; he up the river now in Sing Sing.  He’s spending his days at the big house, but he got connections all through the whole system.  He got his reputation too, and I’m expected to keep it.
Probably an ex or somebody I was messing around with before Kate who come to see me.  Girls got something about visiting guys in jail.  They love the drama.  They love the attention they get from everybody else.  Girls that won’t even give you the time of day on the outside start writing you letters about how much they miss you when you in the box.  It’s bullshit.  But I admit—it do make the time go by faster.  And right now I got nothing but time.
I get stuck in the hall for the count—which means whoever waiting for me is stuck too.  The guard I’m with lets me do wall push-ups after he cuffs me to a door.  I go at it, hard as fuck, until I’m dripping sweat and my muscles are burning.  Working out helps me not to think about her—or the baby.  The burn is good.  It shuts up the furia.  There ain’t shit I can do anyway, so why make myself crazy playing it all over again in my head?
The count takes forever and I’m betting whoever’s out there waiting is regretting this.  First and last visit.  Nobody want to see me that bad.
When we finally walk into the visiting room, my eyes catch her before anything else, even though the place is packed.  I’m a homing pigeon.  I can’t see nothing else.
She’s Kate, but she ain’t Kate.  Same black hair, same pale face.  Same scared blue eyes.  Her body is slamming too, less hip, more tit, and she a little taller.  Maybe it’s the heels.  She looks good.  But I know who she is.
It’s the sister.  Arriving like the grim reaper.  She come repping for the other side.  I gotta smile that this mina got herself into Rikers.  I can tell she’s shitting herself, even worse than Kate.  She ain’t never been in no place like this before, that’s for sure.  All dolled up to come see a criminal like me.
There’s some part of me that wants to run to her just ‘cause they family.  And then another part that wants to refuse the goddamned visit.  I know Kate feel like she ain’t good enough for her own family.  Makes me fucking hate ‘em.  Kate is good—that’s her main problem.  It’s something she won’t let herself see.
Now she’s starting to work her hands like she in full-blown panic mode.  I guess I take pity on her.  She looks too much like my girl.  Shit, it’s messing with my head—and my dick.
I pull out a chair and sit down, drilling my eyes into the back of her head.  She spinning around, looking across the whole room.  She don’t know who the fuck I am.  She turns and stares, her eyes taking everything in.  I can practically hear her heart pounding from over here.  She like a baby bird—ready to flip out and fly into the fucking window.  She looks at me and I gesture to the chair across the table.  Relief hits her whole face and her shoulders relax.  She smiles quick and then it disappears and she look scared again.  She marches over to the table and sits down fast.
“Jaylee?”
Why she gonna ask me after she already sit down?  I’m tempted to say no, but I just stare at her instead.  I can see how much they look alike, but I can also see how they different.  She got doubt all over her face.  She wanna fly the fuck out of here.  That makes two of us.
“Emily,” I say not giving anything away.  I’m gonna make her work hard for it.
“Oh, Kate told you about me?”
“She didn’t tell me much.  ‘Nough to know you exist.  Otherwise I’d think I was seeing ghosts.”
“Have you talked to her?”
“Pfft. Naw, not since she came in here to tell me she was pregnant.  Not that it’s your business.  They send you to come tell me she got rid of it?”
“I came on my own, Jaylee.”
She stops and looks down.
“Kate’s missing; I was hoping you could tell me where to find her.”

  Erin's Review

After reading the first book, Heights of Desire, I dove right in to this one. The first book ended on such a wtf moment, I had to see what happened next.
The prologue sets the stage for the entire book. Jaylee is in prison and Kate is lost without him. Robert wants to salvage their marriage and he and Kate try but she just can't stay away from Jaylee.
In the first book, it was instalust, but it was so necessary to the story. It gave a sense of urgency to Kate and Jaylee's relationship and showed just how fast their connection happened. In Fear of Heights, Kate is just a hot mess. There were times, I will be honest, I wanted to slap the hell out of her. She is so blinded by desire that she doesn't think, she just acts. More times than not, she puts herself in danger. But what do you expect when she's blinded by a sexy Dominican.
Robert, the poor jilted husband, isn't as innocent as he likes to think he is either. He sure likes to play the victim and does it very well. He is manipulative, sneaky and at times, I think more dangerous than Jaylee ever could be. His motives aren't exactly pure as he is trying to dig himself out of his own hole.
The entire story is one twisted tale of desire, lust, revenge and one woman's journey to find exactly who she is. Is she the girlfriend of a Dominican gangbanger or the preppy Manhattan housewife with the perfect husband and perfect brownstone and perfect children? I often wondered if Kate didn't do what she did to try to escape her own stereotype. She puts everything on the line for Jaylee, and I do mean everything. Is she that blinded or is their love real? Is Jaylee just using Kate in his own twisted little game or is he so enamored of the perfect desperate housewife that he will do anything to be with her? And how does Robert fit in? What about the husband? Does he love Kate or does he want to simply possess her?
A May/December relationship like you have never read before, this book is amazing. It's a solid 4.5 star read for me. Just prepare yourself for the ending. It fit perfectly and you will know just how Kate feels, just trust me on this one.
