Ricochet by Jessica Wilde

Title: Ricochet Author: Jessica Wilde Genre: Romantic Suspense Release Date: February 23, 2015 Release Day Blitz: February 25, 2015

Fear.
It's the last thing I remembered.
I was afraid
Afraid to fight, afraid to run... afraid to breathe.
Then, everything had gone dark. As if life was finally hearing my pleas, my cries to end the torment. To end the fear.
But even in the dark, I still felt it.
I always felt it.
My life had been a ricochet of one event leading to the next. Bouncing back and forth from good to bad. Happiness to despair. Hope to fear.
My name is Arianna West. I'm stronger now. Steady. Alive.
I can find a way to survive on my own. I can see what is coming for me. I can channel my fear into strength.
Except... I didn't see Jack.
And Jack changed everything.
For readers 18+ due to language, violence, and sexual content.

Excerpt

I laughed. A laugh so deep that the muscles in my abdomen flexed. How long had it been since I had felt that? Too long. I hadn't really laughed in a long time and something so simple had brought it out of me.
Jack had brought it out of me.
"God, I missed that laugh," Jack whispered.
I went silent, so suddenly that my breath couldn't keep up and it came rushing out with the emotion that had been built up inside of me.
Tears immediately sprang to my eyes and the heaviness in my chest was back.
My life had changed so much. Everything had changed.
"Jack..."
"Ari, please don't cry."
He had turned his body towards me and was holding my face in his hands. The tears running down my cheeks didn't make it far. He wiped each one away.
He saw the moment my control slipped and I just couldn't seem to stop the tears. That's when he pulled me into his arms. Arms that had always made everything better. Strong fingers combed through my hair, down my temple, across my jaw, then retraced their way back up and into my hair once more. He was giving me whatever comfort he could while I sobbed on his chest.
I should have been embarrassed about the quick change in my mood. I should have felt ridiculous. Childish. With Jack, though, I never had to worry about being anyone but myself no matter who I was now.
"So much is gone," I said in a broken and weak voice. "So much is missing from me."
"No, Ari. You're still in there, babe, just a little harder to reach."
I shook my head. In denial? I wasn't sure. He was only half right.
"I've bent too far for too long. I'm broken," I whispered. So much regret came pouring out of me and I couldn't control it.
I had been slowly breaking for three years and my determination to move on was waning much faster than I could ever keep up with.
Jack buried his fingers in my hair and I felt the press of his lips on the top of my head. When he spoke, the tone of his voice sounded defeated. Resigned. "The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places."
I sniffed as the rumble in his chest vibrated against my cheek. His shirt was wet from my tears and I knew I looked like a mess, but I looked up at him anyway.
"What is that from?" I asked.
"What? You don't think I could come up with something so profound by myself?" he teased.
"I know damn well you could, Jack."
He looked at me for a moment, his eyes searching mine and his fingers sweeping a lock of hair back behind my ear. If I didn't know any better, I would think he was reading my mind, seeing all my secrets, all my broken places. "It's Ernest Hemingway. He said that."
"Do you believe it?"
"I do. So much so that I tattooed it on my shoulder the first chance I got," he mumbled with a short chuckle.
I glanced down at his shoulder. It was too dark to see much of anything, but the moonlight streaming in the window showed enough when he lifted his shirt sleeve. The words were there, permanently inked into his skin just above a complex shape that I couldn't quite make out.

I live in Morgan Utah with my husband, daughter, and dog, Kolo. I write as often as my active daughter will let me and my husband has the patience of a saint. I find inspiration from dreams, people I meet, and life experiences. When I write, I usually end up drinking one too many cans of Peace Tea, eating three too many Fruit by the Foot fruit snacks, and accidently kicking my pup and best buddy, Kolo, too many times since he loves to sleep under my desk at my feet. I started writing as a teen, but my fear of the unknown won out every time and I threw everything out. After becoming a mother and deciding to stay at home to raise my beautiful little girl, I tried again when I couldn't stop thinking of ideas. I loved every minute, every hour of sleep lost, and every character that came to life in my mind. It's strange, but my favorite moments are when I have writer's block because I can turn to my husband and find inspiration through him by just doing what we do best together. Talking, laughing, and just being in love. He doesn't like to read, but he never stops encouraging me to keep going. Writing has become an important part of my life and every book has a special place in my heart.

The crescent moon disappeared slowly beneath a thin veil of clouds, and a shiver rushed through

Mac, stopping her in mid-sentence. What her brother would have referred to as the heebie-jeebies raised

goose bumps on both of her arms. She hugged herself, the balance of her words forgotten.

Get a grip, girl. There’s nothing sinister about the moon. Inhaling a deep breath, she glanced

sideways at the man behind the wheel who studied her with an amused twinkle in his eyes.

She reached out to touch his arm. “Thanks for coercing me into this dumb ride-along tonight. It

A scornful laugh burst from him. “Telling you I wasn’t going to cook for you ever again if you

didn’t come doesn’t exactly qualify as coercion, Mac. But it’s good to see you laugh for a change, even if

I am the butt of most of your jokes.”

“Don’t be a poor sport, Paddy.” Indeed, Mac had laughed until her cheeks ached. No one could

get her out of a funk like Paddy. Clearly, he was concerned about her after her breakup with Douglas,

the most recent disaster in a long line of unfortunate relationships he’d suffered through with her. She

suspected the real reason behind his invitation was to get her out of the house and back among the living.

“Now see, there’s another thing. Do you think, while I’m on duty, you could refrain from calling

me that?” He tried without success to hide his teasing smile.

Her gaze swept over him as he flipped on his blinker and turned onto Harbor Road. “I suppose

you’d be wantin’ me ta call ya Patrick, all proper, would ya?”

One of his eyebrows shot upward as her fake brogue intensified. She shouldn’t taunt him, but

then someone had to keep him from taking himself so seriously. Although, she had to admit he made a

striking figure in his state trooper uniform, his badge displayed prominently on his shirtfront. It’d been his

dream for as long as she could remember, and she’d been almost as proud as he was the day he graduated

“Actually, I was thinkin’ you might call me Officer Callahan.”

He hadn’t gotten the name all the way out before she hooted and held her sides while she laughed

helplessly. After a moment, and Paddy’s exasperated sigh, she managed to contain her amusement.

“Maybe...if we hadn’t been friends since we were both four years old...no, you’ll always be

Paddy Callahan—the blond-haired boy who played dress-up with me, who taught me how to cover

second base, and talked me into going skinny-dipping more times than I want to remember.”

Best friends all of their lives, Mac knew Paddy better than he knew himself...and vice versa.

She’d tagged him with his nickname back when she was too little to wrap her tongue around Patrick, and

now he was stuck with it. Similarly, he’d rejected Samantha Anne McCallister as being way too long, and

she’d been simply Mac from that day forward.

Her father had returned from Viet Nam with PTSD, which ruled out the possibility of him ever

returning to the front lines. The Air Force, always quick to treat the symptoms instead of the cause, gave

him a recruiting job where he stayed until he retired two years ago. After Mac’s mother quit her nursing

position at the hospital, they’d sold out and moved to Anchorage. Now with Mac’s brother stationed at

Anderson Air Force Base in Guam, Paddy had become the one she leaned on...probably too much. Bless

his heart—he never seemed to mind.

The Stranger by Harlan Coben

The Stranger
By Harlan Coben
#1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense Harlan Coben delivers his most shocking thriller yet, proving that a well-placed lie can help build a wonderful life– and a secret has the same explosive power to destroy it.
The Stranger appears out of nowhere, perhaps in a bar, or a parking lot, or at the grocery store. His identity is unknown. His motives are unclear. His information is undeniable. Then he whispers a few words in your ear and disappears, leaving you picking up the pieces of your shattered world.
Adam Price has a lot to lose: a comfortable marriage to a beautiful woman, two wonderful sons, and all the trappings of the American Dream: a big house, a good job, a seemingly perfect life.
Then he runs into the Stranger. When he learns a devastating secret about his wife, Corinne, he confronts her, and the mirage of perfection disappears as if it never existed at all. Soon Adam finds himself tangled in something far darker than even Corinne’s deception, and realizes that if he doesn’t make exactly the right moves, the conspiracy he’s stumbled into will not only ruin lives—it will end them.

Exert
Adam stood by the sticky bar. There was a dartboard behind him. Neon signs advertised Miller Lite, but Adam had a bottle of Budweiser in his right hand. He turned to the man, who had just sidled up to him, and even though Adam already knew the answer, he asked the man, “Are you talking to me?” The guy was younger than most of the fathers, thinner, almost gaunt, with big, piercing blue eyes. His arms were white and reedy with a hint of a tattoo showing beneath one of the short sleeves. He was wearing a baseball cap. He wasn’t quite a hipster, but there was something of a wonk attitude coming off him, like some guy who ran a tech department and never saw the sun. The piercing blue eyes held Adam’s with an earnestness that made him want to turn away. “She told you she was pregnant, right?” Adam felt his grip on the bottle tighten. “That’s why you stayed. Corinne told you she was pregnant.” It was right then that Adam felt some kind of switch go off in his chest, as if someone had tripped the red digital timer on some movie bomb and now it had started to tick down. Tick, tick, tick, tick. “Do I know you?” Adam asked. “She told you she was pregnant,” the stranger continued. “Corinne, I mean. She told you she was pregnant and then she lost the baby.” The American Legion Hall was loaded up with town dads sporting those white baseball T-shirts with the three-quarter sleeves and either baggy cargo shorts or perfectly no-assed Dad jeans. Lots of them wore baseball caps. Tonight was the fourth-, fifth-, and sixth grade boys’ lacrosse draft and A-team selections. If you ever wanted to witness type As behaving as such in their natural habitat, Adam thought, watch when parents get involved in their own off springs’ team selections. The Discovery Channel should film this. “You felt obligated to stay, am I right?” the man asked. “I don’t know who the hell—” “She lied, Adam.” The younger man spoke with such conviction, not just as though he knew for certain but that, at the end of the day, he had Adam’s best interest at heart. “Corinne made it all up. She was never pregnant.”

The Stranger
By Harlan Coben
Review By Heidi Lynn

Thank you very much to Penguin Group Dutton, NetG

alley, and Harlan Coben for providing me a copy of this book so I may bring you this review.  It was an honor and a privilege to read and write this review for my favorite mystery author.

This has to be the BEST book I have read in 2015!! Hands down by far Harlan Coben’s best novel EVER!! What an amazing adrenaline rush just from reading his book. Once I started it I knew that I had to finish it that night!  The Stranger had everything from lies, secrets, betrayal, blackmail, suspense, faking pregnancies, missing persons, etc.

There were a few passages in the book that I particularly enjoyed:

1)      He picked up the box and read the back: thirty percent of “father’s” who take this test will discover that the child they are raising is not theirs.

2) “Everyone looks happy,” he’d say to Corinne.
“Oh, not you too.”
“What?”
“Everyone looks happy on Facebook,” Corinne said. It’s like a compilation of your life’s greatest hits.” Her voice had an edge to it now. “It’s not reality, Adam.” “I didn’t say it was. I said everyone looks happy. That was kinda my point. If you judge the world by Facebook, you wonder why so many people take Prozac.”

My heart went out to Adam and his kids for having their lives flipped upside down for the events that happened.

There was a character in the book by the name of Heidi. Many authors don’t choose that name as a character. I was pleasantly surprised.

I totally fell in love with The Stranger by Harlan Coben!
This book deserves more than just 5 stars!!

An obligation is a course of action that someone is required to take, whether legal or moral.
At six years old, Myla was sent to a family her father and mother had chosen for her when they knew their time on earth was almost up. What they were unaware of was what they thought would be her safe haven would become her living hell.
Kai has been watching Myla from afar since he took over the family business from his father and inherited the responsibility of keeping her safe. When word gets back to Kai that Myla is not only in danger, but that his assets are being compromised, he immediately jumps into action and does the only thing that can be done at the time by marrying her.
Neither Myla nor Kai would have thought that something that started off as a farce would become the most important thing either of them could've ever done.

“Everyone is looking for you.”
I turn my head, pulling my hair out of my face as I watch a boy I’ve never seen before climb up the stairs and into my tree house.
“Who are you?” I ask him as he sits across from me.
“Kai,” he smiles, looking around. He looks a lot different than the other kids I know. His hair is long, and his skin is a lot darker than mine. “Why are you hiding?”
I shrug and look away from him. Daddy was yelling earlier; he was so mad that he was turning red. Then Mommy started crying, and Daddy started yelling louder. I heard Mommy telling Daddy that he had to send me away. I don’t want to go away. I try to be good, but sometimes, I forget to listen.
“Why are you crying?”
I look up at him and wipe my face. “I’m scared,” I whisper, wiping my nose.
“Come on. I’ll protect you,” he says, holding his hand out to me.
Then my mommy calls my name again. I look at his hand, move Mr. Bear under my arm, and put my hand in his.
“Myla!” Mommy yells, running towards me.
I can tell she has been crying again.
“Where did you go?” Her hands grab my shoulders and she shakes me hard.
“It’s my fault. I asked her to show me the tree house,” Kai tells her.
She stops shaking me then looks at him. “You shouldn’t have done that. You knew we were looking for her,” she says angrily her head.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking,” Kai says softly, putting his hands in his pockets and looking at the ground.
I look back at Mommy, and she shakes her head before grabbing my hand and pulling me with her. When I look over my shoulder at Kai, he smiles, making me smile back.

a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof

They say when you assume that you make an ass out of you and me. Kenton Mayson learned this lesson firsthand when he made assumptions about Autumn Freeman and the kind of woman she is based on what little information he had. What he finds out is she’s not only beautiful, but also smart, funny, a fighter, and exactly the kind of woman he wants to share his life with. Autumn made assumptions of her own about Kenton, and now he needs to prove her wrong in order to protect her and their future.
